Holdout Story

'MAN, DESPITE HIS ARTISTIC PRETENTIONS, HIS SOPHISTICATION AND HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OWES HIS EXISTENCE TO A SIX INCH LAYER OF TOPSOIL AND THE FACT THAT IT RAINS' - PAUL HARVEY

The Holdout began when Mando and I purchased a long forgotten piece of farm land on the Silver Coast of Portugal.

From the beginning in 2018 and the discovery of the abandoned apple orchard buried beneath brambles, our goal has stayed the same ... We want to share this unique and soulful farm and our arts focused space.

We started this as a Gallery and Studio Residency Program, but the mission expanded.  We fell in love with our land and now we make outstanding, and unique cider.  Like everything we do, we make our cider with creative passion and a lust for DIY excellence and nice design.

The Holdout is about sharing something we care about with friends near and far.  It's about being near the sea and taking the time to enjoy the fruits of this land.

Whether it's making our original cider 'The Girl' or perfecting our latest cider, 'The Wolf' we approach everything just as we did from the day we discovered our orchard  ... with a commitment to craft, a nod to creativity and a wry smile for a little luck.

We know all our lives move fast and slow and all over everywhere, distractions are always nearby, but thank you for visiting our site and taking part in our journey,

Hyland, Mando, Ze, and Job
